Salik Tolls and Traffic Fines: How They Work When You Rent a Car in the UAE

This is one area where UAE car rental works differently from what many tourists and even new residents expect. Here's exactly how it works, in plain terms.

What is Salik?

Salik is Dubai's automatic toll system — there are no barriers or toll booths; overhead sensors read your number plate as you pass under specific gantries (mainly on Sheikh Zayed Road and a few other major routes) and charge a small fee automatically. Sharjah has a similar system called Darb.

Who pays the toll — you or the rental company?

The vehicle owner (the rental company) is billed by Salik directly, since tolls are tied to the number plate, not the driver. What happens next is exactly what our rental extras exist for: if you add a Salik tag to your booking, tolls are simply tracked and settled as part of your rental. If you don't, any tolls incurred are charged back to your deposit or card on file after the rental ends, usually with a small administrative fee.

Why fines can arrive after you've returned the car

Traffic fines (speeding, wrong parking, etc., caught by radar or camera) go to the registered vehicle owner first — meaning the rental company — and can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to appear in the system, depending on how the violation was processed. This is completely normal and not specific to any one rental company; it's how the UAE's centralized traffic fine system works.

What this means practically for you

  • Any Salik charges or fines incurred during your exact rental period are your responsibility, even if they surface after you've returned the car.
  • This is why deposits aren't refunded instantly — most rental companies (us included) hold deposits for a few days specifically to catch any fines that come through late.
  • Ask upfront what the administrative fee is for processing a fine — reputable companies keep this small and transparent.
  • Drive normally and you'll likely never think about this again — the overwhelming majority of rentals end with zero fines.

Our approach

We check the system before releasing any deposit and contact you directly if anything comes through — no surprise charges months later. If you know your trip involves a lot of Dubai driving, adding the Salik tag extra at booking is the simplest way to never think about it.
